The Italian photographer and winner of the Cherrydeck Creators Award<\/em><\/a>, Silvia Rocchino<\/a>, shares Strange Fruit<\/em>: a series inspired by the song sang by Billie Holiday protesting American racism.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Silvia Rocchino’s<\/a> series Strange Fruit<\/em> is a visual representation of the historical song with the same name performed most famously by Billie Holiday, who first sang and recorded it in 1939. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally written by the jewish teacher Abel Meeropol as a poem and published in 1937, the song protests American racism, in particular the lynching of African Americans:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pastoral scene of the gallant South
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolia, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the tree to drop
