Blondie’s known hit “Call Me” turned 40 this year. The song was released in 1980 and stayed no. 1 for six weeks, earning the band their first Grammy nomination.

80th anniversary | 23rd February
The original “Pinocchio” from Walt Disney Pictures turns 80 years old. The award-winning animated story featuring the wooden boy was created in 1940.
Raphael
500th anniversary | 6th April
This year marks the 500th anniversary of the Italian artist’s death. The Renaissance master passed away in Rome on 6 April 1520. In London, the Victoria and Albert Museum is refurbishing its Raphael Court and exhibitions will be held at the Scuderie del Quirinale, in Rome, and the National Gallery of Art, in Washington.
Metropolitan Museum of Art
150th anniversary | 13th April
In 2020, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York marks 150 years since its foundation. The Met opened the doors of its first home at 681 Fifth Avenue on 13 April 1870.
Greta Garbo
30th anniversary | 15th April
The famous Swedish film actress, Greta Garbo, passed away 30 years ago. She was amongst the greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema.
Albert Einstein
65th anniversary | 18th April
2020 marks 65 years since the famous theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein, passed away. He’s best known for his mass–energy equivalence formula, which has been named “the world’s most famous equation”.
VE Day
75th anniversary | 8th May
This year is also the 75th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe). This was the day where Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces was formally accepted by the Allies of World War II in 1945.
Florence Nightingale
200th anniversary | 12th May
The renown English nurse Florence Nightingale would turn 200 years old this year. Nightingale’s prominence comes from the times she was serving as a trainer of nurses during the Crimean War. She gave nursing a favourable reputation and became an icon of the Victorian culture.
McDonald’s
80th anniversary | 15th May
This year we celebrate the first McDonald’s restaurant opening in San Bernardino, California, USA. At the time, the restaurant was called “McDonald’s Bar-B-Que” and had 25 menu items, most of them barbecue.
Pope John Paul II
100th anniversary | 18th May
The Pope John Paul II would celebrate is 100th anniversary this year. John Paul II was head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 1978 to 2005.

In May, we celebrate the birth of the American singer Peggy Lee. The American jazz and popular music singer, songwriter, composer, and actress would turn 100 years old.

The English author Charles Dickens passed away 150 years ago. He is known for having created some of the world’s most famous fictional characters and is seen by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.

65th anniversary | 22nd June
Disney’s “Lady and the Tramp” turns 65 in 2020. The film captured the hearts of the audiences in 1955 and continued to do so for many more generations to come.

80th anniversary | 27th July
This year marks 80 years since Bugs Bunny first appeared in the Warner Bros. His first cartoon was called A Wild Hare.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing
75th anniversary | 6th and 9th August
75 years ago, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed during World War II.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of Henri Desgrange’s passing. Henri was the French cyclist and journalist who founded the Tour De France.

The American engineer, car manufacturer, and founder of the Chrysler Corporation, Walter P. Chrysler, passed away 80 years ago.

80th anniversary | 30th August
2020 marks 80 years since Sir J. J. Thomson passed away. The famous British physicist won the 1906 Nobel Prize for Physics for discovering the electron.

95th anniversary | 7th September
Laura Ashley would be 95 years old this year. The famous Welsh designer and businesswoman started by making furnishing materials in the 1950s, and later expanded her business into clothing design and manufacture. She died in 1985.

In September, we celebrate the birth of Peter Sellers. The British actor and comedian was best known for the Pink Panther films.

50 years have passed since the American rock musician Jimi Hendrix passed away. Although his mainstream career lasted only four years, he is known as one of the most influential guitarists in history.
Mickey Rooney
100th anniversary | 23rd September
The American actor Mickey Rooney celebrates his 100th birthday this year. The actor, vaudevillian, comedian, producer, and radio personality was in the industry for nine decades and appeared in over 300 films. Rooney was among the last surviving stars of the silent-film era.

75th anniversary | 26th September
The Hungarian composer and pianist Béla Bártok passed away 75 years ago. Considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century, he together with Franz Liszt are regarded as Hungary’s greatest composers.

John Lennon

John Lennon would turn 80 years old this October. The British rock singer and songwriter gained worldwide fame as the founder, co-lead vocalist, and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles. He passed away at the age of 40, after being shot in Manhattan.

45th anniversary | 11th October
“Saturday Night Live” is officially the longest running sketch-comedy series in history, turning 45 this year. Still overseen by its original producer and creator, Lorne Michaels, “SNL” has earned several Emmys, featured innumerous celebrities, and launched the careers of countless comedians.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, in Dublin. This was a day of violence in 1920, during the Irish War of Independence. Thirty-two people were killed or fatally wounded.

Walt Disney Pictures’ “Toy Story” turns 25. Featuring the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and more, the movie was nominated for three Oscar and spawned already three sequels.

Bruce Lee would turn 80 years old this year. The actor was known for his martial arts films and is considered to be the most influential martial artist of all time.
