For over 20 years, Pantone influenced multiple industries such as fashion or design in terms of product development and purchasing decisions. Each January, the brand comes up with one or two colours which will trend in the upcoming year.
Pantone just announced the Color of the Year. For 2021, PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray & PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating are the ones chosen by the experts. The strong grey and bold yellow will be the guideline for many industries this year.
The decision doesn’t come out of the blue. The Pantone colour experts are constantly on the hunt for new colour influences.
According to the brand website, “this can include the entertainment industry and films in production, travelling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles, and socio-economic conditions.
Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures, and effects that impact colour, relevant social media platforms and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention.”

In 2020, the Color of the Year was PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue. To celebrate the tone, Pantone established several collaborations. Some examples are the luggage collection with Away and skateboard collection with Globe.
When it comes to partnerships for this year, we still need to wait to see what the brand has prepared for the Pantone Color of the Year 2021. So far, the release came with tools for designers as well as Instagram and Facebook filters.
