“No place is boring, if you've had a good night's sleep and have a pocket full of unexposed film.” -Robert Adams When I was 16 years old, I was given my first camera, an old Minolta hand-me-down. I can vaguely recall a family trip to the Florida Everglades and taking my first photographs. Although I didn’t realise it at the time, the camera would soon became the object that would enable me to escape the bounds of a painfully shy adolescence. Truth be told I don’t actually recall the precise moment that I thought of myself as a quote unquote ‘photographer’, but it was merely a matter of time before my newfound teenage hobby would merge with my unbounded love of the ocean and the majesty of the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. While my fascination with water photography; the beauty of being immersed in a liquid glass, the strange way it refracts light, the life it supports beneath its surface, the delight it gives those of us lucky enough to experience it, has only grown since those first tentative holiday snapshots, my appreciation of the art form and various disciplines of photography has only but grown too. Morning alarms are now happily set well before sunrise. Whether it be the crisp, rose coloured hues cast across morning sky, or a stolen late night kiss of a newlywed couple on their special day; authenticity, simple beauty and the lasting relationships formed with my clients of are what inspire me most.
