Mauro Serra

I am a photographer and a former neuroscientist, the path I followed made me reflect on how the human being and his perception are the sum of many small mechanisms. As one of these small factors changes, macroscopic differences are triggered. As an artist, I use photography as a means to investigate and enhance these differences. My interest ranges from still life to portrait. My subjects, mostly common, are represented in an unusual and extroverted way, creating images with a strong aesthetic impact and as well as conceptual value. This is how a doll's severed leg becomes a luxurious object or a face with make-up of an old man becomes a vehicle of amusement and vanity. The ultimate goal of my photography is to provoke the observer and make him reflect on socially important issues such as the concept of aesthetics, food, personal care, perception, tradition and innovation. I founded with Lucia Del Pasqua a creative duo known as LaterArte; we portray an authentic reality, paradoxically through a lively aesthetic, to show an alternative vision of social issues.
